Personal Work - Daily Paintings #01
This week I started painting something everyday, I am going to try to make a painting a day from now on to hopefully help me improve and make me quicker at painting. I'll be posting them daily at: https://www.instagram.com/serafini_art/ and I'll be adding them weekly here.

From Script To Screen - Suburb Concept
I decided to have a suburb with loads of the same house, as it compliments the entrapped feeling I wanted to create. I did a desaturated version as well which I think will best suit the depressed salesman.

'The Christmas Cupcake Basilica' - Speed Painting Challenge
I tried to experiment a bit in these speed paints, tried to loosen up a bit and make everything a bit more painterly. I need a lot more practice with it, this is just the starting point.

What If Metropolis - Revisting Production Art (Structures)
I made some alterations to the design of the page as Phil suggested (I hope the font is okay) and I also did another page of them, with 3 more of structures that are in my final scene.
Phil suggested in my OGR that I change one of the foreground buildings as it had a similar shape to the other foreground building. The middle building is the foreground building that will be staying in the scene and I think I might use the building on the right as the other foreground building, as it is a completely different shape and is a bit more unique.

What if Metropolis - Concept Art
My final concept for my city. It is based off of one of the last thumbnails I created (169) and overall I'm quite happy with it. I tried to balance out the warm colours with some blue shadows and I pushed the cityscape back a little bit so it has some more depth.

What If Metropolis - A Few More Thumbnails 140 - 142
I didn't have much time tonight to do thumbnails due to band commitments (I had a live interview on the radio though, which was a lot of fun!) , so I was only able to get three more done. I kind of followed Jordan's advice in the sense that I used Maya with a camera set up to look around my scene and create some compositions that I may have lost time trying to figure out perspective for.
I found this quite useful and it allowed me to create these thumbnails really quickly, it's something I may use a bit more on perspectives that I'm not fully comfortable, however I do want to try and improve on my perspective and digital painting skills in general so I think it's a method I'll only use if I'm really struggling.
To me 141 is the strongest here, the colour palette I'm still playing with but I find the composition to be quite strong. 141 could also work quite well as it directs your eye straight down the path, which could make for an interesting scene.

What If Metropolis - Design Thumbnails 126 - 139
I started to design some exterior objects for the city inspired by Gaultiers designs. I think it's getting to the point where this stage is the most important as its the littler things that are going to make my final concept work. Something I neglected in the previous project and something I plan to correct this time round.
Seeing as the render is going to be an exterior shot I decided that these props should take priority, I will be designing Interior props as I believe doing so will give me a greater understanding of what my world looks like and why it operates the way it does.

What If Metropolis - Thumbnails 108 - 113
Carrying on with the thumbnails, playing around with colour trying to get a better feel for my city. I'm actually quite happy with this sheet of thumbnails. I really like 108, to me the colours look great, the textures work quite well I think however it isn't as sketchy as fashion illustration. The background elements kind of are, but the foreground elements I wanted to keep their form.

What If Metropolis - More Thumbnails 101 - 107
After getting my feedback from Phil I've been thinking of how I can add more fashion illustration texture to my work. I looked at some of Gaultier's Illustrations as well as various other fashion designers and found that the more sketchy stuff looks very interesting.
I'm still trying a mixture of tools while creating my thumbnails to give me some variety, I think I need to speed up my work flow as these took me the best part of an hour, possibly more to do.
Creating the city birds eye plan really helped figure out where to put buildings and how I could frame the image. I'm quite fond of 103, The road/path texture looks quite appealing to me, as well as some of the littler details on the buildings. 105 is also quite interesting, tried a more sketchy approach, it's something that I will have to practice a bit more at to make it look how I want it to.

What If Metropolis - City Plan & A Few More Thumbnails
I decided to draw up a rough birds eye plan of my city, just to get more of an idea where everything is. Chances are it's probably going to be changed but I found it useful when imagining how it could be laid out.

What If Metropolis - Thumbnails 76 - 97
For these thumbnails I followed Jordan's advice and started trying to use Gaultier's work slightly differently, By using different sections of his designs I was able to extend the potential structure list for my city. Done with the lasso tool, picking colour straight from Gaultier's designs.
I quite like some of the stranger designs like 90 and 94, I feel as if 87 and 92 work well as structures.

What If Metropolis - Thumbnails 62 - 75
I did some more design based thumbnails for my world, I silhouetted some of Gaultier's designs and then used that as a reference to create different structures and trees. I'm thinking the trees could potentially have the sailor stripes on them, almost like the candy cane trees in Wreck It Ralph.
I quite like 70 and 75 for the tree designs and possibly 72 and 73 as a more generic structure.
