Minor Project - Reflective Statement

I found the minor project to be a really fun experience, from early on I knew that I wanted to make an animated short over the minor and major project. My initial plan was to be completely ready for animation by the end of my minor project. However, I realised that to create four characters to the standard that I wanted would take longer than planned. I put a lot of effort into creating the characters and I am disappointed that I couldn’t get the last character created in time for the minor project submission.

Throughout this project I’ve come to realise a few things about myself, one of them being that I find rigging and skinning to be a massive challenge. When I was rigging the boy it felt as if I wasn’t making any progress even though the project was moving forward. I think this step of the pipeline is one that costs me a lot of time because I always want to push myself and do the best I can, so I try to do slightly more complex rigs. Although it was time consuming I believe that it was a very practical use of my time, as I was able to get a good translation from concept to CG. I’ve also learnt that my knowledge around lighting and rendering is lacking, when creating the turnarounds, I struggled to get them lit nicely and unfortunately I over exposed the Mum turnaround with the rim lights. This is something that I really want and need to improve on, as it is extremely important that my animation is well lit.

I am happy with how the Boy and Parents turned out, I think that the boy is a very successful translation from concept to CG and I am very excited to move on with the Major project and to begin animation. I noticed a few things that need improving with the Boy as I created a test animation. I need to add a control which can move his mouth texture, preferably position and rotation so that I have more control over his mouth. Another very important thing I need to add is animated phoneme shapes, I’ve spoken to Alan regarding this and it is something that will be developed very shortly. With the Mum I need to re look at her dress rig, as all of its deformations are a bit lumpy at the moment. Lastly I need to finish off the Bed/Monster, I was having a hard time translating it from concept to CG. So far it isn’t where it needs to be and that is one of the first things I will do moving forward.

I think it is important to mention that at the moment I don’t think I am achieving the animation style I want for this project. It’s getting close but not one hundred percent there yet, I will make sure that I do a few more tests and get something I am completely happy with before committing to the animation for the short. I keep watching Jelly Jamm and similar styles to pick apart their methodology, this is something I want to make sure I get right as I want to sell myself as an animator.

Overall I am happy with how the project went, I feel as if I did as much as I could in the time I had. I am very happy with the Boy and I am very excited to create some rich animations that can be added to my demo reel. I feel like I am in a good place to go over into the major project and I will make sure that I quickly and efficiently get to the animation stage, so I can give it all the care it deserves. This project has largely been successful in my eyes and I think that being in University most days has really helped me to stay on track and to be motivated.

Minor Project - Art Of

I got the art of finished today and I managed to get a bit of animation done, which is rendering at uni as I type this. I'm going to try to get some more animation tests done tomorrow ready for the hand in.

Minor Project - Turnarounds (no sfx)

Here are the turnarounds for the finished characters, I still need to add sound effects for the boy and the dads turnaround.

Minor Project - Bed Modelling #1

Over the break I worked on modelling the bed, unfortunately I didn't get as far as I had hoped but here is how it is looking so far. I'm not sure how to model the eyes but I will get back to this model once I've set up my turnarounds.

Minor Project - Boy Turnaround Progress #3

I tweaked the animation a bit and adjusted the texture on the base, so tomorrow I should be able to set it to batch render.

Minor Project - Boy Turnaround Progress #2

I've changed up the turnaround and added some animation to it, The snoring animation that is in the second cycle will be repeated for the clay and wireframe sections.

Next up I will be adjusting the base/bed thing as suggested by Phil, I want to dabble in substance painter, so it might be a nice opportunity to give it a whirl.

Minor Project - Boy Turnaround Progress #1

I've started getting the Boy's turnaround ready, I still want to add some animation to him but here is how it looks so far:

This is how it looks rendered, the lighting may need a bit of tweaking to get a better look but overall I think it is working. Any feedback will be appreciated, as It would be ideal to start rendering this tomorrow!

Minor Project - Mother Rigged & The 'Happy' Family

The mum is pretty much finished, there are still some skinning issues with the dress but I will iron those out and hopefully it will all work nicely. I got some advice from Alan on how to tackle it which involved creating a duplicate mesh and using rivets to control the main mesh.

I couldn't resist putting the family together, so I quickly put them all in a scene and posed them for a group photo. While doing this I noticed that two of the boys buttons weren't working correctly, they had some how flipped, so I will be investigating that as well as polishing the mothers dress.

Minor Project - Mother Model & UV's

The mother is now modelled and had her uv's laid out, next I will copy the rig from the dad and get onto skinning.

Minor Project - Dad Textures

The Dad is pretty much where he needs to be so I will now move onto getting the Mother done and then it is time to tackle the bed.

Minor Project - Dad Rigging #1

The Dad is rigged, I will be exporting the rig so I can reuse it for the mother when she is modelled. Next up I'll get him skinned and then some textures painted for him.

Minor Project - Dad Model & UV's

The Dad is modelled and has his UV's laid out ready for skinning! Soon the boy will have a "loving" family!

Minor Project - Boy Textures #01

These are the current textures for the boy, he is currently missing his buttons because I couldn't remember how to attach them to the rig, so that will be a question for Alan. I can now move onto the parents, the boy will need some additional face shapes when it comes to lip syncing as I want the transition between shapes to be smooth at points.

Minor Project - Boy Face Textures #01

Today I worked on getting some face shapes done for the boy, I decided to create them in Illustrator as the smooth vector lines were something I wanted to achieve. There is still stuff to clean up and I need to create all of the Phonemes but it is really exciting seeing him come to life!

Minor Project - Boy PJ's Rig Test

I've been trying to work on a way to rig the PJ's so that they can be deformed with the leg, this is my first test using a NURBs circle as a motion path with joints attached. It automates the deformation quite nicely and it's possible for me to add individual controls to control each joint separately. Below is an image of what the rig looks like so far it still needs skinning adjustments but the method seems to be relatively decent.

Minor Project - Boy Test Textures

I took a break from skinning/pose space deformation stuff to rough in some textures, I was mainly concerned with getting some rough eyes and a mouth in and figuring out the spacing. There is still a lot of work to be done with positioning and scale but the boy is starting to come to life.

Minor Project - Boy Rigging #3

The boy's arms are now rigged, have squash and stretch and IK/FK functionality. Like the legs they have flexi-planes as part of the rig to add some extra control when it comes to skinning. Once I've checked over the rig to make sure there isnt any issues I can start skinning!

Minor Project - Boy Rigging #2

I finished off the leg rigging today and started on the arms, here are some of the various expressions/node editor work that I had to do to get the rig to be stretchy in both IK and FK mode.

Minor Project - Boy Rigging #1

Rigging is well underway, I decided to do the same rig that I used in my Adaptation B project, it will overall give me more control and exaggeration when it comes to animation. So far I've set up the spine, the neck, a temporary head joint and I'm halfway through the legs. Next I'll be working on FK controls and switching the visibilty between IK and FK controls, I'll also be adding flexiPlanes to the legs and arms to allow for better deformation.
